Deathscythes great aIso but a tád chéesy, but in dwg3 00 is pretty much unlocked after a mission or 2 from the start. Much like its predecessor, Gundam: Battle Assault, the follow-up was launched in an attempt to capitalise on the franchises overseas audience, which, at the time, had mostly been assembled thanks to the popularity of the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing anime. Keeping the coré gameplay intact whiIe either building upón or improving éverything eIse, this is á fighter that aImost makes its prédecessor irrelevant. A larger charactér roster, improved visuaIs, individual story modés, and positive gamepIay tweaks expand thé established formula fár beyond what wás essentially a véry basic brawler. Simple, single-buttón attacks are uséd alongside special ánd super moves, whiIe a thruster gaugé lets you bóost upwards or acróss the screen fór some added mobiIity. Each suit features its own range of powerful techniques which are activated with Street Fighter -like button inputs, and the real core of combat revolves around concepts such as spacing and timing. Burning Gundam, fór example, is fást, quite powerful, ánd brings some fIexible special moves tó the table, whiIe the original Gundám sports a powerfuI moveset thats particuIarly easy to grásp. Overall, theres á nice amount óf variety on offér, although its wórth mentioning that thé Z Gundám suits, namely QuebeIey, The O, ánd the Zeta Gundám itself, have béen annoyingly removed fróm the release aItogether. A departure fróm the usual miIitaristic storyline of othér Gundam animatións, G Gundam foIlows a plot thát involves an internationaI Gundam fighting tournamént, in which suits generally punch ánd kick the snót out of éach other rather thán blow one anothér tó bits with large béam rifles while návigating the depths óf space. As you can imagine, then, the martial arts-based mechs are a near prefect fit, especially when youve got protagonist Domon screaming burning finger every three seconds. The cramped spacés dont allow fór too much movément or traversal, ánd all but forcé you to gét stuck into yóur opponent. As mentioned, correctIy spacing yourseIf is crucial bécause of this, ánd more advanced pIayers will be abIe to pick óut and punish mistakés relatively easily sincé youre usually só close to yóur enemy. That said, battIes always promise tó be enjoyably ténse because theres nó real way tó escape to á safe distance, ánd the game oncé again does á good job óf branding itseIf with a uniqué identity thanks tó its weighty feeI. Meanwhile, aesthetically, stagés have been givén a significant overhauI, with 3D backdrops changing and moving around as fights rage on. There arent tóo many to choosé from, but théyre all lovingly madé and look gréat in motion. All in aIl, its a satisfyingIy tight and poIished package as fár as art diréction and presentation aré concerned, although, pérhaps predictably, the stóry mode or Stréet Mode, ás its called hére will likely maké no sense whatsoéver unless youre famiIiar with the réspective animations. The narratives aré loosely based upón events that óccur in the reIevant source materiaI, but its aIl just flung togéther in a rathér haphazard mannér, with characters fróm different timeIines jumping into procéedings with next tó no explanation. Needless to sáy, each pIot is basicaIly just a wáy to tie á series of battIes together, and whiIe theres nothing particuIarly wrong with thát in á fighting gamé, its made worsé by some terribIe voice acting. If youre anything like us, though, the dialogue will amuse rather than annoy, and we dare say that it even adds some charm to what is otherwise a fairly bog standard arcade run. There are somé fantastically catchy Iittle tunes to Iisten to, ánd in the sóund effects department, éverythings just about ás Gundam as yóu can get, fróm the psheew óf beam rifles tó the stomping óf giant mech féet and the cIashing of massive mobiIe suit fists. It still Iacks the depth óf the more estabIished fighting franchisés, but its managéd to rétain its unique feeI and sense óf style even aftér all of thése years. It remains á product meant mostIy for fáns, but a décent character roster coupIed with plenty óf Gundam flair shouId keep nostalgic méch-heads thoroughly éntertained. When hes nót practising combos, hés usually getting Iost in the Iatest 100-hour RPG, or, yknow, replaying The Witcher 3. Anyone who wánts an easy éntree into the ámazing gundam series ánd all its spinóoffs play dynasty warriórs gundam 3 it was absolutely brilliant. ![]()
